Dar es Salaam Brief Background
Dar es Salaam is the capital of the Dar es Salaam administrative province and consists of administrative districts. Although the present capital is Dodoma, Salaam is the most popular city in Tanzania.
This city is the hub of arrival and departure among most tourist especially those who come to see the national parks for safaris and enjoy the Zanzibar.
The name Dar es Salaam means “the residence of peace” in Arabic. This city is Tanzania’s largest and the largest one in eastern Africa in terms of population. Aside from its importance as economic centre, Dar es Salaam is famous for its arts, fashion, media, film and such trends. Swahili is widely spoken in the city.
Dar es Salaam was built in the late 19th century by a sultan (Majid bin Siad of Zanzibar) close to Mzizima. When the sultan died Dar es Salaam declined but was revived when the German East Africa Company came in the area. It became a commercial center and infrastructures were built including the railway line in the 1900s.
During the First World War, the British captured the place from the Germans and made it the administrative and commercial centre (Wikipedia). In the late 1960s, the Tanzanian government turned into a socialist form, which slowed down the city’s growth which caused poverty. Socialism ended in the 80s and up to the present, Dar es Salaam becomes Africa’s leading cities.
Climate and Geography

Getting to Dar es Salaam
Flying and moving around
If you are coming from outside the country, you can fly in and get off at Julius Nyerere International Airport. This airport is the principal one that serves most international flights.
Julius Nyerere is about 10 kilometers from the city center. You can request for pick-up and drop-off services from most big hotels in town. Just like in most airports and big cities, you should bear in mind that heavy traffic is the usual issue, if not, a nightmare.
By Trains. Dar es Salaam has two trains that travels through the center of Tanzania and to the West. However, this is not a reliable transport if you are traveling with short time to spend on a slower train.
Traveling by bus is better if you choose the right company. They travel much faster than the trains.
Taxis are available outside the stations but you need to negotiate first before taking off and advisable to pay in locally currency. Taxis have no formal companies but are regulated by the government
By car for hire is available and usually organized by many hotels. Dar drivers drive on the left.
Other transports include bicycles, three-wheeled indian vehicles (Bajaj) and mini-vans (daladala). These vans have specific routes but you may jump on and off anywhere.
