Brief Introduction to Luxembourg
Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The city contains the Luxembourg Castle established by the Franks during the Early Middle Ages.
Luxembourg City is at the heart of Western Europe. The city was ranked as having the second highest per capita GDP in the world.
The European Union has its seat of various institutions that includes the European Court of Justice, European Court of Auditors, Secretariat of the European Parliament, European Investment Bank, European Investment Fund and the European Stability Mechanism.
How Luxembourg Originated
During the Roman era, there was a crossroad that met at the present Luxembourg city. The Archbishop of Trier established the Church of the Redemption (now St Michael’s Church) near the intersection of the Roman where a marketplace appeared which slowly developed into a city.
Since the city is strategically located, military forces were established, walls were built and a lot of wars were fought around the area. At one time the 1867 Treaty of London forced Luxembourg to dismantle its city’s fortifications and took 16 years costing millions of gold francs.
Luxembourg is by far the largest urban area of the country. It is not heavily populated but it is with parks, forest areas and has UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
