Malabo History Brief & Introduction
Malabo is situated on Bioko Island of Equatorial Guinea. It is the largest and the capital city of this nation.
The city of Malabo was first established by the British in 1827 who then leased this island from Spain. It was called Port Clarence by then and used as a naval station to support the efforts in stopping slave trade in the region.
The area became a new settlement of freed slaves, and when it reverted to complete Spanish control, this place was renamed Santa Isabel. The president Francisco Macias Nguema changed into its present name, Malabo in 1973, in a campaign to replace European place names with more African names.
You can easily reach Malabo, if you come from outside, through its several international carriers serving Malabo International Airport. Such carriers include Air France, KLM, Kenya Airways, Lufthansa, Aero Contractors and other regional airlines serving the surrounding countries.
