Nouakchott Brief Introduction
The name originally come from Berber language which means “place of the winds”. Nouakchott is the largest and the capital city of Mauritania. The capital also serves the as the administrative and economic center of the country.
Being a hub of Mauritanian economy, Nouakchott has ports that handles thousands of tonnes of cargo per year. Large part of the population were nomads but due to the droughts many people set up tents within the city and brought about urbanization.
Brief Historical Background
Nouakchott is historical a non-significant area and very little was mentioned during its pre-colonial and colonial history. It is a tiny and fortified fishing village with a couple of hundreds of people.
It was believed that when Mauritania was preparing for independence, it has no capital city. The choice of this capital was due to only due to its moderate climate and central location in the country. In addition, Nouakchott is on one of the most valuable trade routes to West Africa.
Mauritania was established as an autonomous republic in the French Community, but when it became independent in 1960, they made Nouakchott as the capital (Wikipedia).
Climate and Geography
Nouakchott has a deep water port and coastlines with shifting sandbanks and sandy beaches. The capital is covered by the sand dunes from its eastern side which can be a problem. The city is spread out but with few tall buildings, most are one-story.
A hot desert climate with hot temperatures throughout the year is Nouakchott’s common weather feature. The high average temperature is around 33 degrees Centigrade and the low average temperatures can range from 25 to 13 degrees Centigrade during winter months.
