Yangon Hotels & Travel Guide
Brief Yangon City Introduction
Yangon is the former capital city of Burma (or Myanmar). The term 'yangon' or also known as 'rangoon' literally means "end of strife".
Yangon is Burma's largest city with over 5 million people and is still the important commercial centre of the county. It has the biggest number of colonial building in Southeast Asian region.
Yangon's infrastructure is somewhat not sophisticated compared to other big Southeast Asian cities. However, you will find that it has the highest number of colonial buildings still standing in the region.
The British cultural influences can be seen around the city being a colony during the mid-18th century. Britain seized Yangon and other areas during the Anglo-Burmese War of 1852. The British designed and constructed a new city on a grid plan and made Yangon the capital. The capital developed: hospitals and colleges were established, parks, spaces and modern style buildings with wooden architecture flourished.
The colonial Yangon was then known as "the garden city of the East", and its public services and structure were almost comparable with that of London's by the early 20th century.
