Antananarivo was then popularly known in French as Tana is the capital and the largest city in Madagascar. It is founded in the early 17th century by King Adrianjaka of Merina who then declared the site as his capital and expanded his royal palaces (Wikipedia).
The name Antananarivo (“City of the Thousand”) is the name given by a king honor of Andrianjaka’s soldiers who captured and guarded the hill and its city.

Getting to Antananarivo
This City of a Thousand or popularly known Tana can be easily reached from various points of origin in the world.
By air, you will get to Ivato Airport, Antananarivo’s main airport. Ivato Airport is serviced by various international airlines including Air France and Air Madagascar. For you information, all foreign travelers need to have an entry visa. Although it is possible to buy visa upon arrival, which can be stressful, better get one before you travel.
Upon arrival, you can either get a taxi or airport bus that can bring you to the front door of your hotel. Make sure you changed money at the airport of before flying there.
There are four major bus status in Tana: northern bus stations – Nossi-Be and Antsiranana, eastern stations – Andasibe and other destinations. You may ask your taxi driver to find the right station for you if you are not sure.
