Bangui Brief Introduction
Bangui is the capital city of the Central African Republic (CAR), which lies on the northern banks of the Ubangi River. The river serves as the border between the CAR and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
At the center of the city, you will be greeted by a white and green columned arch built in 1979 in honor of the dictator Bokassa. This arch serves as the gateway of the city. Nearby is the beautiful Presidential Palace.
The northern part of the the capital offers scenic beauty of nature featured with lush rolling hills which are criss-crossed with hiking trails leading to the nation’s natural and exotic treasures.
Bangui Brief History
The capital was established as a French outpost in the late 19th century.
Based on archaeological research, Bangui has many Iron Age sites that hold a number of metallurgical tools and artifacts. These sites were then included to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative list. The artifacts found were thought to be close to the 9th century BC.
Bangui was founded in 1889. It was later chosen as the new heardquarters fo the French administration and kept its importance as a military center. The Central African Republic became independent from France in 1960.
The airport serving Bangui is the Bangui M’Polo International Airport (BGF) located 7 kilometers northwest of the capital. Note that all European (mostly) need to get visas before arrival.
The airport also offers flights to other African capitals/cities and to Paris.
Bangui is the hub of transports of the Central African Republic. It has eight roads connecting the city to other major places in the country and its neighboring countries including Cameroon, Chand and South Sudan.

Geography and Climate
Bangui is situated on the northern banks of the Ubangi River. It is the only major city located by the river and covers about 67 square kilometers in area.
CAR is situated north of the equator and has a daily temperature the reaches 30 degrees Celsius. Bangui features a tropical savanna climate and has dry winters. Warm season is from January to March and cold season from June to August.
Bangui City is bordered by thick tropical rainforests by the river banks which offer great areas for hiking and other tropical activities for locals and foreign travelers as well.
