Introduction to Jerusalem
Jerusalem is a city situated on top of a plateau in the Judean Mountains in between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea.
Jerusalem is considered a holy city (and one of the oldest cities in the world) and where three major religions exist side-by-side namely: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The name “Jerusalem” is being attributed to two different words: yeru (Sumerian) means “foundation” or yry (Semitic) means “settlement/to found/foundation”; and Shalem (or salam/shalom in Arabic and Hebrew) means “peace”.
Combining the two words then would entail “abode of peace”, “dwelling of peace”, and other etymologizations such as “The City of Peace” and “Vision of Peace” (Wikipedia).
The Old City
Inside Jerusalem one can find the Old City which is enclosed by a wall that divides four quarters: Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Armenian. In particular, three religions claim holy sites inside the walls: the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Dome of the Rock.
It is the Western Wall plaza that is being visited by millions of religious visitors to worships with other worshipers of the other religions mentioned. Jerusalem is not only popular place for religious pilgrims and worshipers of the world’s major religions but also to non-believers and travelers alike.
Visitors from all over the world want to experience and feel the holy place, see interesting and historical sites and structures built since the olden days thousands of years ago.
Nowadays, tourists can enjoy tourist attractions, aside from archaeological sites, places of cultural events, arts, theater, music, painting and architecture and gastronomic delights.
