Podgorica has various names in the course of its colorful history. Before the 11th century, it was called Birziminium. Then known as Ribnica in the Middle Ages. Podgorica was first used in 1326. It is once called Titograd named in honor to the former President of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito.
Playing a great role being in the crossroads with important routes, Podgorica became economically strong and acted as vibrant regional centre of trade and communication with the West. Being the centre of all these, Podgorica strengthened its economic power, army and strategic position.
The development of Podgorica was interrupted by the Ottoman power and used as its military settlement and bastion in the region. However, the Ottoman rule ended when the Berlin Congress in 1878 annexed Podgorica to Montenegro. This moved has helped rapidly developed Podgorica.
Having suffered, ravaged and passed by numerous wars and conflicts, Podgorica is now the seat of Montenegro’s Parliament and government. The President resides in the older royal capital called Cetinje.
