Praia, Cape Verde Introduction
In 1615, the town of Praia de Santa Maria appeared taking over the previous settlement. The official transfer of capital status to Praia happened in late 1800s. there had been proposals to move the capital somewhere else but the Portuguese administrators did not show any interest to do so.
When Praia gained independence in 1975, the number of residents rapidly increased. Most of the migrants were from all over the islands of the country. This migration resulted half of the population of the nation living in Santiago.
Praia City has an international airport. There is a national flag carrier (TACV) and TAP airlines that serve flights to Europe, Africa, South America and United States (wikitravel.org). From the airport, you can either take a taxi or bus to Plateau.
The city has two major bus companies serving the passengers. You will find numerous bus stops, and you can also easily flag taxis everywhere.
When taking taxis, better get the ones with a taximeter to make sure you pay the standard rate. Walking around is alright but could be difficult to do since there are no official names yet and not official map yet available.
