Sofia City's Brief Introduction
Sofia is an old city that spans over 2 thousand years. It is the capital city and the largest one of Bulgaria.
The city is at the foot of Vitosha Mountain and the strategic center of the Balkan Peninsula.
With over a million population, Sofia is also one of the largest cities in the European Union. Sofia City hosts the nation’s major universities, cultural and social institutions and where business and financial centers are located.
The old name of Sofia (among others) was Serdica or Sardica, which was quite popular in Latin, Ancient and Byzantine Greek and it is related to the local Celtic tribe of the Serdi (Wikipedia).
Serdica was Sofia’s old town which was established in the 5th century. It was a small settlement but was declared as Burgaria’s capital in the late 18th century.
The present name Sofia is said to be coming from the famous Holy Sophia Church, a 6th century and second famous church in Sofia City, Bulgaria.
