Yaounde has a population reaching 3 million. It lies at the heart of the country and elevated about 750 meters above sea level.
Yaounde History Brief
In agreement with the chiefs of Ela Esono, two German explorers occupied the Epsumb or Jeundo in the late 19th century. A little later, it was occupied by a German botanist as agricultural research station and named Jaunde after the local Yaunde or Ewondo people (Wikipedia).
The botanist’s settlement then became a base for trade between natives and German business people. Jaunde was occupied by Belgian troops during the First World War. When the Germans were defeated by the French, Yaounde was chosen as the colonist’s capital in 1922.
Yaounde continued as the seat of government of the independent Camerron while developing its economy.
